A good bread deserves a good bread knife. This is such a simple little thing, that I was hesitant to create a post just for it. I am however often surprised at how many people do not have a bread knife or even know about it, so I thought it deserves a mention. It is not something I grew up with, because bread did not play a big role in our food in India, unsliced loaves even more so, and I am sure there are innumerable people for whom that is true too.If you like artisan bread or bake your own bread, you probably have one already. If not, it is something I would highly recommend. It is a superb tool that will serve you for a long time. In my case, it is one of those things that I bought without knowing how much use I would get out of it, but looking back it has been an excellent functional purchase.
There, I told you this post didn't have much else.

Great tip, I'm a fan of a good knife as well. You can ruin a good loaf of bread with a crummy knife.
I agree,Nothing like a serrated bread knife to cut the like butter!:)I have a beautiful angled one.
I grew up with a beautiful bread knife at home, but don't have one now :-(
I just baked some bread and would have loved to have owned a bread knife!
ET, I don't think I would survive without the bread knife. Other than bread, (I rarely buy pre-sliced bread) I use it to slice tomatoes, patra-vade without getting all the masala out etc. I am quite surprised by how many people do not know its advantages. Definitely a needed post...
Thank you all. Yaay, so we all agree that a good bread knife is a must.
Raaga, welcome here! Hope you can find one soon.
ET, i have updated the blog to denote the link to Wiki. If you scroll down you will find a lot of external links. I found the recipes on a couple of these links.
My aai has a wonderful bread knife and so it one of my first kitchen purchases. A true kitchen essential.
ET, which brand would you recommend? I want to send a gift to a friend and thought this would be a great idea.
Priyanka, thanks much for that link. That helps a lot, and it looks like a good resource for a lot of information about Oriyan food.
Cooker, gluten girl, I wouldn't have expected any less from you, and now I see where it comes from!
Manisha, that would make a great and rather thoughtful gift for someone who likes food, and bread in particular. I recommend checking out some of the brands like Wusthof and Henckels in a store before you buy. Even mid-priced ones like something of the Target variety can be pretty decent.
